EMDR Intensive Retreat in Alabama
If you have looked over the EMDR page and blog posts and realized that you would benefit from trauma and EMDR therapy but dread weekly sessions, an Intensive may be the best approach for you.
EMDR intensives are a condensed form of EMDR therapy that differs from the traditional weekly sessions. Instead of spreading treatment over weeks and months, intensives reduce the therapeutic process to several consecutive days, often spanning a weekend. During these intensives, we meet up to six hours per day, allowing for a deeper, more immersive therapeutic experience.
Intensives allow for a continual and deep focus on your therapy process. We can accomplish more since each session's usual greeting and closure time is bypassed.
Benefits of an EMDR Intensive Retreat
Without daily stressors impacting you between weekly sessions, the focus remains on healing trauma and attachment wounds.
Another benefit is that the Intensive format allows for continuous-time to develop access to the thoughts, feelings, and sensations associated with the wounded parts of the memories and events you are processing. This can be referred to as the “felt sense.”
Our wounded parts hold beliefs, thoughts, and emotions and store them in the body, creating neurobiological states and body sensations.
Being able to establish internal resourcing, develop a felt sense of the wounded parts, and focus on the resolution of the trauma over the course of a couple of days brings hope and healing within closer reach.
The word Intensive is intimidating…what does it actually mean? Intensive refers to time and structure. It is scheduled similarly to a workday versus the traditional weekly therapy model.
The Potential for Transformative Healing During an EMDR Intensive Retreat
EMDR intensives have the potential to facilitate transformative healing experiences. By shortening the timeframe of the therapeutic process, individuals can rapidly address deeply ingrained traumas and emotional wounds. This accelerated healing can lead to profound thinking, behavior, and emotional shifts.
Moreover, EMDR intensives often take place in serene and supportive environments. The EMDR Intensive Retreat offers the perfect opportunity to get away and immerse yourself in healing and transformation. The setting provides a safe and nurturing space, a temenos, as Carl Jung would say. A safe, protected space to explore and confront difficult emotions.
The retreat is located in Fairhope, AL, and includes four nights, six meals, and eighteen hours of therapy.
Ready to Focus on Healing and Looking for a Safe and Supportive Experience?
EMDR intensives are a valuable and innovative approach to psychotherapy, offering an opportunity for accelerated healing and transformation.
Benefits: Accelerated progress, deeper immersion, reduced distractions, intensive support, consistent focus, and convenience
While not suitable for everyone, Intensives can be a powerful tool for those seeking to address traumatic memories and emotional distress. As with any therapeutic approach, it is essential to determine whether this approach is appropriate for your specific needs and circumstances.
FAQ’s About EMDR Intensive Retreats
-
Someone who experiences a high degree of stress in their daily life. Our nervous systems are limited and have a window of optimal functioning. Consistent high stress levels can impact our resilience and the ability to tolerate trauma processing. Being able to leave daily stressors behind and retreat to a calm and supportive environment offers you the opportunity to focus on healing.
Someone who needs convenience. If your schedule does not provide time for weekly sessions, an EMDR Intensive Retreat provides the convenience of consecutive hours each day to focus on your goals.
Someone who feels that traditional therapy has not been effective. Do you find that when you step out of your session, you leave everything there? You forget about the conversation you had. Therefore, you don’t feel as though you are integrating, growing, and experiencing the change you desire. Being able to immerse in the therapeutic process helps you stay in the momentum and flow of the work.
Someone motivated and ready to change. Trauma healing and change is a process accompanied by discomfort. Yet, you know it is time, and you want someone to guide, support, and hold that space with you. The retreat is exactly for that purpose!

I strongly encourage the EMDR intensive retreat if at all possible. Being able to withdraw into your process and leave behind your responsibilities and stressors is ideal. However, if that is not feasible, in-office Intensives are offered.
If you are new to therapy or have weighty issues you’d like to resolve, I recommend two days minimum. If you feel that you have progressed in therapy and would like access to consecutive hours of therapy, we can discuss your goals and customize a plan.
-
The cost of the EMDR Intensive Retreat is $5,340. In-office Intensives are $997 per day.
*This service is not covered by health insurance.
-
We can discuss pre and post Intensive work. This is optional. If this feels prudent and judicious for you, we can discuss journaling prompts, experiential exercises, and/or worksheets/workbook assignments that support your goals.
